Publisher’s Summary
Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate New York town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.
When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his thirteen-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. Aidan is betting on Rachel, after five years of captivity, being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.
Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life—and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

My Review
If you’re wondering how I came across this author, the answer to that question is a book club. Yes, I joined a book club and “The Quiet Tenant” by Clémence Michallon was their pick for the month of August. We’ll save the book club blog for another day…
From the very first pages, I was captivated. The author introduces us to Rachel, a character shrouded in mystery and fear. It had me asking, how did we get here? Who is this monster? And who is his prisoner?
Then, we seamlessly transition into Emily’s perspective, where she finds herself entranced by a customer who seems to be her dream man. The stark contrast between the two narratives leaves you questioning if they could possibly be the same person as the earlier described monster.
What really stood out to me was the brilliance in the alternating points of view. Michallon masterfully crafted distinct voices for each character, allowing us to delve deep into their minds and emotions. It was as if I was stepping into entirely different worlds with every chapter.
One aspect that sent shivers down my spine was the inclusion of chapters from the victims’ perspectives. This unique narrative choice added an extra layer of suspense and tension to the story. It forced me to confront the harsh reality of their plight and brought an unsettling sense of proximity to the antagonist.
“The Quiet Tenant” is a rollercoaster of a psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Clémence Michallon’s storytelling prowess is evident, and her ability to keep readers guessing is commendable. While I won’t delve into spoilers, the twists and turns in this book are sure to leave you speechless.

It’s about me and the parts of my life that find me in the dark. It’s about me and my younger self and the way she looks at me, the way she keeps calling out to me, demanding answers I don’t have.
